2020 PFRA Scholarship Recipients

By   August 11, 2020

This year, multiple applications were received from many deserving students. Consequently, the PFRA application review committee had a very difficult time being able to select only three recipients as the entire pool of candidates were all outstanding. The PFRA Scholarship committee sends their appreciation to everyone who submitted an application and we know all these students will have a very successful education and career ahead of them.

Garrett Bradley Poe is the son of Deputy Chief Steven Poe, and is the third child in the Poe family to receive the PFRA Scholarship Award. Garrett graduated this year from Dennison High School in the top 7% of his class where he served on the Student Council’s Board of Directors, was a member of the National Honor Society, played baseball, volunteered in several non-profit organizations, worked part-time, and received several awards – one of which was “Most Likely to Succeed-Class of 2020”. Garrett will begin his studies this fall semester at Texas A&M University in a pursuit of a degree in Kinesiology Pre-Medical with a goal of continuing on to Medical School concentrating on becoming a Doctor in Orthopedics. According to his History teacher and his employer, Garrett is destined and guaranteed, “to do great things”. Congratulations, Garrett!

Peyton Lammons is the daughter of Lieutenant Chris Lammons at Station 2A. Peyton graduated from Prosper High School in 2018 and is currently in her junior year at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. Her degree plan is Kinesiology with a minor in Psychology. Besides keeping a rigorous academic schedule, she is a “dual athlete”. She has applied herself in two different health care settings as a Certified Nursing Assistant and an Electrocardiogram Technician, collecting 125 direct patient care hours and determined to accumulate over 1,000 hours of direct patient care. All of which she hopes will lead her to a career as a Physician’s Assistant. Congratulations, Peyton!

Alexa Reichert is the daughter of Firefighter David Reichert at Station 13C. Alexa graduated from Gunter HS with dual credits, finishing her final semester as a Foreign Exchange student in Brazil where she taught English and competed on a dance team. While still in high school, she was a nationally ranked gymnast, took Advanced Placement courses and Dual College Credit courses, met academic qualifications for the college Phi Theta Kappa honor society, held leadership positions, was President of the Student Council, served on Congressman Ratcliffe’s Leadership Board and represented her community at Girls State. Alexa will be attending Texas A&M University seeking a degree in International studies and Diplomacy. Upon graduation, she will commission into the US Army as an officer, with an interest in the possibility of becoming an aviator pilot like her grandfather. Congratulations, Alexa!

Friends, we have some good news and some bad news.

The bad news: we are not permitted to gather for our monthly meeting tonight, unfortunately.  The city feels that the risk is too high at this time.

The good news:  All of the scholarship applications are in, and the scholarship committee, led by Yvette, is hard at work at determining this year’s scholarship recipients!  We’ve decided to award them IN PERSON, at the parent’s station, during the parent’s shift.  So there will be 3 opportunities to gather, outdoors, to congratulate these fine students, when the time comes.  We hope you’ll join us for these presentations.  Please stay tuned to the facebook page and your email, and as soon as winners are chosen and presentation dates are scheduled, we will share that info with you.  We will video them as well, for those that can’t make it, and we’ll share them on our facebook group.

PFR Appreciation Picnic:  The picnic has been moved to Nov 7th.  Treats w/ the Turkey has been cancelled, so we moved the picnic to their previously scheduled date.  We’ll do a fundraising effort as part of the picnic, to try to accomplish both goals with one event.
