2022 PFRA Scholarship Recipients

By   August 19, 2022

PFRA is excited to announce this year’s Scholarship recipients are: Katie Grogan, Aspen Holm, and Hudson Gray. Congratulations from the 2022 Scholarship Committee:  Bob & Chris Doherty, Dan Hay, Andy & Linda Howard, John Mouser, and Donna Sablotny.

Katie Grogan is the daughter of Driver Engineer/Paramedic Steven “Scott” Grogan at Station 4, B Shift. Katie graduated from high school in May of 2021 in the top 6% of her class with 18 dual credits from Grayson County College with several honors and awards. She is maintaining a GPA of 4.0 as she enters her second year at the University of Texas at Tyler where she has already made the President’s List. Katie’s goal upon completion of her degree in Nursing is to become a surgical nurse at a “big” hospital.
According to her high school coach, Katie “is very focused on her goals and will be a great leader in society in her adult years.”

Aspen Holm, is the daughter of Firefighter Chad Holm at Station 3, B Shift. Aspen graduated from Royce City HS in the top 5% of her class of 485 with completion of her Associates from Paris Junior College in May 2021 with a GPA of 3.85. She began attending Oklahoma Wesleyan University last fall where she is enrolled as a junior in their nursing program. She also received an athletic scholarship and is a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball team. Aspen’s goal is to finish nursing school with a GPA of at least a 3.70 and later pass the National Council Licensure Examination. Upon completion of nursing school, she wishes to pursue a career as a registered nurse specializing in emergency or postpartum.
Aspen’s Fundamentals clinical instructor and Pharmacology professor wrote, “Aspen is a dedicated and hard-working student who has risen to the challenge of engaging in one of the hardest undergraduate degrees while still being a student-athlete. A rare feat.”

Hudson Gray is the son of Captain Anthony “Tony” Gray at Station 4, B Shift. Hudson graduated in the top 10% of his high school class with a GPA of 4.23/4.0 and a 3.714 GPA for dual credit hours from Collin College. Hudson earned quite a repertoire of Academic and Extracurricular accreditations throughout his high school years as well as a beekeeping business. He began his company “Hud’s Honey” while a sophomore which developed from a “random interest” in beekeeping while in the 8th grade. He has since acquired 25 beehives and produced a total of over 1000 pounds of honey and is now on his way to pursue a degree in Agricultural Economics at Texas A & M. His goal in the future is to maintain his beehives while in college, join a bee club, and learn more about the science behind bees in hopes of acquiring 500 beehives and being able to ship them across the country for pollination services and producing large amounts of honey.
Letter of recommendation from one of his high school teachers: “The day in and day out struggle that Hudson handles very easily while balancing his start up business, schoolwork, and other extracurricular activities, goes to show you that he is more than capable of great things….I have full faith that Hudson will not disappoint.”

PFR Training Center Opening Soon

By   July 28, 2022

At the July PFRA meeting, Capt. Michael Carr gave a great presentation on PFR’s training program, with a behind-the-scenes look at the soon-to-be-completed PFR Training Center, located near McDermott and Ohio. The citizens of Plano are extremely fortunate to have a fire department that routinely trains all of its firefighters every week on different topics. The training facility will enhance the entire training program by providing firefighters with realistic, hands-on fire and rescue scenarios.

The Plano Star Courier also just published a couple of articles on the Training Center. Read these links for more information and a lot of pictures.
